Our Story

1

Public Spaces and Libraries

Public spaces are neutral grounds where people can come together, interact, and enjoy activities as a group or community. These spaces should not be treated as luxuries, but rather, as necessities to urban life.

The Book Stop Project is a series of micro-libraries dotted around the Philippines that serve as a public space in the form of a library. It seeks to understand how public libraries can be used as a place to encourage reading.

The Book Stop as a Library and Community Platform

One of the motivations for the creation of an open-concept micro-library is the lack of public libraries in the Philippines.

According to the data, there is an average of 1 public library for every 66,608 Filipinos in the country. While providing access to books, the Book Stop aims to provide services as a community platform by experimenting with how the micro-library can be used for other activities or events.

The Book Stop as a Research Platform

Cox et al. (2026) demonstrated that libraries serve as durable infrastructure for citizen science and generators of social capital, but noted that local relevance and community-driven priorities were critical for longevity.

The Book Stop will borrow from this emerging body of practice around libraries as sites of participatory and citizen science and apply this logic at a neighborhood scale fit for a micro-library.
