Abstract

This document is a research and development effort into the viability of setting Mayon Volcano on an international platform as a global tourist destination. Known for its historical and cultural significance to the surrounding locals, its conical form, and its geographic location in the tropics of the Philippines, Mayon has great potential in becoming one of the best natural volcanic wonders of the world. This Tourism Destination Development Plan (TDDP) branches into sets of studies to ultimately visualize Mayon as one of Philippine’s top tourism products.

Part I,

A Reflection on Mayon Tourism, looks firstly into the macro tourism of Philippines as a country, and the tourism characteristics that attract certain tourist types.

The TDDP also takes into consideration what marks tourism as “global.” Studies of other volcanos around the world and the lessons learnt from each case study are extracted to discover global volcanic culture and the tourism that surrounds it as a learning curve applied to the development plan for Mt. Mayon. The understanding of infrastructure and spatial contributions of international architectural landmarks, which denotes the erection of ‘iconic’ buildings as a catalyst to the wider urban economy and tourism development of their respective locality, are also explored. Additional to these case studies should be the mapping of how secondary cities embody significant tourism functions in Southeast Asia.
